2019 Excavation Dates

16th June – 27th July

Open to all with no experience necessary

We offer two options for training programmes:

Excavation and Post-Excavation or Post-Excavation only

Excavation of early medieval cobbled surface in Trench 3, Bamburgh Castle
  • Week 1: June 16th- June 22nd
  • Week 2: June 23rd- June 29th
  • Week 3: June 30th- July 6th
  • Week 4: July 7th- July 13th
  • Week 5: July 14th- July 21st
  • Week 6: July 22nd- July 27th

Book anywhere from one to six weeks. However, we recommend booking two weeks minimum for a well-rounded experience. Our tuition fee is £280 per-week, which will cover all on-site excavation and post-excavation activities.

BRP is open to anyone aged 12 and over. People under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

We welcome all experience levels and we aim to accommodate everyone where possible. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions about access, facilities, etc.

Planning Your Visit

Your tuition fee covers 6 days of training. The BRP training week runs Sunday-Thursday, Friday is a collective day off for staff and students to allow time for excursions in the local area or some R and R, and concludes on a Saturday (unless you need to leave early on your last day with the project). The final week we will work Sunday-Friday with no day off, as BRP staff will need to close down the site on the Saturday.

  • Saturday- Arrival Day
  • Sunday – Induction Day
  • Monday – Work Day
  • Tuesday – Work Day
  • Wednesday – Work Day
  • Thursday – Work Day
  • Friday – Project Day Off
  • Saturday – Work Day/Departure day

We recommend that students arrive at their accommodation on the Saturday, so they are ready for the onsite induction on the Sunday.

Accommodation must be booked separately. There are many options for accommodation in the area to suit every budget and we are happy to offer suggestions. However, we do encourage all participants to stay in close proximity to BRP staff, as this allows staff and students the opportunity to get to know one another in a social setting and there are friendly faces around should you need a helping hand. This year our staff will be staying at Budle Bay Campsite.

You are welcome to book a space in the bunkhouse or camp. Camping is not likely to fill up but there are only 7 bunkhouse spaces (mixed-sex) available each week, so if this is your preferred option we suggest you book with us ASAP. All students will have full access to the kitchen in the bunkhouse. If you would like assistance finding holiday cottages etc. please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Booking Process

  1. Read the Field School page and the FAQ page
  2. Decide if you will be staying at the campsite or not
  3. Fill out the Application Form
  4. You will then receive an email from the BRP staff
  5. Pay the deposit to secure your place
  6. Book your accommodation
  7. Any remaining balance needs to be paid by May 20th

Providing their is availability for the weeks you request, we will then ask for a deposit. Without this deposit we cannot guarantee your place during the season. Late bookings are sometimes possible, so please call or email us directly if the field school is already underway.

The £280 deposit is the payment for your first week. There are multiple options for payments:

  • Paypal (Available to all students, transaction fee of 4%)
  • Bank Transfer
  • International Draft in sterling
  • Cheque (UK students only)

Completing Your Payment:

Bookings must be paid in full by May 20th, 2019. Failure to make advance payment in full will result in the loss of your deposit, unless there are exceptional circumstances (BRP discretion). If you are unable to make your final payment by the due date please email Graeme (see below) to discuss arrangements. There are no automatic refunds made against spaces booked but not taken.

Contact details for the project can be found on the Contact Us page.
